“FARCICAL” OBJECTION

“FINEST” BUTTER GRADE. MR. lORNS REPLIES TO CRITIC. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. In the course of a statement in connection with the dairy controversy, Mr. W. A. iorns, chairman of the Dairy Board, remarks, “The secretary of the South’ Island Association appears to object to the board’s action in approving of a butter contract without consulting individual factories, but this is exactly what the South Island Association itself did some years ago. They agreed with exporters regarding a standard contract without consulting individual factories and in the face of objections from representatives of the National Association in the North Island. The statement that the adoption of “finest” grade as the basic grade in butter contracts represents a loss to producers is, of course, farcical. Those who object to the basis of “finest” grade seem to imagine that, if buyers were offering Is lid f.o.b. for finest butter and Is 5Jd for first grade, then if the standard contract provided for first grade as the basis, buyers would offer Is Gd for first grade and Is OJd for finest. The secretary of the South Island Dairy Association and his friends might imagine that the exporters are rogues but we cannot think they hold the opinion that they are fools.” Mr. lorns also says, “Mr. Wight is making a mistake when he says the board has approved a clause in the cheese contract which provides for a premium fur finest grade. The board has not discussed nor has it agreed to any of the clauses of the suggested standard cheese contract."
