CHEAPER FREIGHTS.

NEW RATES BY RAIL. AUCKLAND TO WAIKATO. MOTOR TRANSPORT ATTACKED. Affected seriously by the road and river goods traffic between Auckland and the Waikato, the Railways Department has decided to reduce freights on general merchandise between this district and the city. This move Is regarded as a direct frontal attack on the widespread operations of the motor transport companies between hero and Auckland. The announcement was made today that the department has decided to reduce its rates from Auckland to stations between Te Kauwhata and Te Awamutu inclusive, also to Hamilton and Cambridge branch stations. In many instances the reductions will exceed £1 per ton, and in addition the department is instituting a system of free delivery of general merchandise at Hamilton, Frankton and Cambridge. What is known as the “small lots scale’’ will be abolished, which means a reduction of about 50 per cent, in the charges for this section of traffic. The General Manager of Railways has Instructed that the new rates are to operate as soon as the necessary arrangements can be finalised. Messrs Stanley and Macdonald, of the Railways commercial branch, are now in the Waikato for this purpose.
