AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. DEFEAT OF SLOAN MORPETH. NOT QUITE UP TO FORM. (Australian Press Association.) ADELAIDE, Aug. E& In the final of the Australian atfESO four golf championship to-day Ryafi defenled Sloan Morpelh (New Zealand) by 2 up and 1 to play, over 36 boles. Morpelh was not quite tip to his recent brilliance, and lie was unlucky with in's putting. Morpeth won the first- three holes by steady play, but lie showed a tendency lo leave Ihe fairway. At the turn the scores were 30 each. Morpeth drove out of bounds at the lOlh hole, and look 7, and lost the hole, lie had an unplayable lie in a crater at the next hole. Ryan had an excellent 2 at the 16th. hole. Morpeth holed out in 4 at the J7th hole, of 500 yards, his favourite Hole. They were all square at the end of the morning round. In the afternoon Ryan was 1 up at the turn. At the 29th hole Morpeth got a “birdie’’ 3, and the match was squared. Morpeth hit the back of the tin with a chip shot at the next hole, and narrowly missed a 3 at the next, a par 4 hole.

Two holes laler Ryan sank a putt of 18ft. for a 2, making dormy 2. At the 35th hole Morpeth’s approach was too strong. He putted from a bank 15yds. away, and bis ball stopped 3ft. short of the hole, which was halved in “birdie’’ 4’s. ROTORUA TOURNAMENT. RIDDELL’S REMARKABLE SCORE. ROTORUA, Thursday. Play In tho golf tournament was continued to-day in perfect weather. In the semi-finals, Rex George (Auckland) defeated Seifert, jun. (Manawatu), 3 up and 2, and Morrice In his match with O’Callaghan easily maintained his superiority and won by 6 up and 4. In the Junior Cup semi-finals Rainger took Goss to the 20th hole before losing. Bartleet lost to Western, 5 up and 4. A remarkable score was made by G. Riddell (Waipukurau) In the afternoon, 5 3 3 2 4 4 4 3 3 —total 31. Bogey Is 35. This equals the record for the course.
