WATER TRANSPORT.
HAMILTON-AUCKLAND.
NEW LEAGUE FORMED. DEWATERING SWAMP LAND.. An enthusiastic meeting of local business men was held in Hamilton yesterday. Mr James Tidd, who was voted to the chair, said that they realised that the time was opportune for the development of that great national asset the Waikato River. Various indications pointed to the fact that our requirements were being generally recognised, and a recent trip down the river with the Hon. the Minister of Public Works and others was a great success. He stated that the attitude if the Auckland Harbour Board was most encouraging, and that he thought those interested should get together. After considerable discussion the following resolutions were passed, and it was decided to waste no time in collecting data that would be of interest: — “That those present form themselves into a committee to promote in every possible way and to secure the establishment of a policy in connection with the Waikato River which will give direct water communication with Auckland city and enable progressive unwatering of adjacent swamp lands. “That a league to be called the Auckiand-Waikato Waterways League be set up to, if possible, embrace the most influential interests and to carry out in a more extensive way the objects of the committee. “That Mr N. G. Gribble be appointed secretary and organiser, and be authorised to take such steps as he may think fit to pi'omote above objects and to report at an early date."
The following were selected as a local committee: —Messrs J. Tidd, A. E. Manning F. Clapham, J. R. Fow, D. Hay, S. V.’Tyler, F. Farrell, F. W. Luxford and N. G. Gribble.
