DEBATE ON CONVENTION

LOCAL CLUB’S EFFORT. AN INTERESTING EVENING. ' Another successful debate was held by members of the Hamilton Workers’ Educational Association Debating Club on the subject “That we should not submit to the tyranny of iconvention.” Mr J. 11. Gittos presided over an attendance of about 23 members. , For the affirmative Mr Daldy described convention as a parasitic growth attached to the laws, manners and customs of the country. Convention was of unenlightened origin, and was used by the ignorant, and not by the intelligent minority. It was, he added, the fetish of the ignorant, the prejudiced, the inartistic, and the undeveloped. Self-expression, genius,' and individuality were inevitably cramped by Ihe strong influence of convention. Mr C. F. Sherley, who had the negative, claimed that convention supported honour, truth, and purity, in fact all those sterling qualities upon which the fabric of the British Empire rested. He characterised fads, fashions and fancies as tyrannical, but not convention. Conventions gave one the right of free speech and action. The seconders of the affirmative and negative respectively were Mr T. H. Chester and Mrs E. E. Oldham. A full discussion followod. A motion that the debate be a nodecision was carried. “That. Wireless tends to discourage personal musical effort,” was selected as the subject for the next debate. Leaders were chosen as follows: Affirmative, Mr R. Peters, seconder, Mr J. Thompson; negative, Mr R. 11. Page, seconder Mr J. G. Pike. Mrs E. E. Oldham was elected chairman. ITCHING PILES cIIRED.
