ABSURD CONDUCT,
OF CUSTOMS OFFICERS. WELL-KNOWN CLASSIC SEIZED. The United States Customs Service is in the limelight again, and for two reasons. It was announced on May a that it had confiscated on the grounds of obscenity a copy of Rabelais imported from London by a Mr Edward Newton, of Philadelphia. Mr Newton is a noted book collector, author, and bon vivant, as widely known on one side of the Atlantic as on the other. Rabelais, of course, can be had from any book store and nearly any public library in the country. The other incident which caused indignation was a raid on the crew s quarters on the Red Star liner BelgenlanJ, which recently returned from a world cruise. The Customs men found a number of souvenirs bought by seamen in various ports which through inadvertence had been omitted from the ship's manifest. Thereupon the Customs officers threw these helterskelter into a trunk without identification tags and carted them away. Later they were ordered to return these trinkets, so brought them back and dumped them on the deck while most, members of the crew were on shore leave. When the sailors returned they found many of their possessions missing and some others badly damaged.
