VESSEL HELD UP.

TROUBLE AT PAPEETE.

STEWARD CHARGED WITH THEFT,

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. According to a passenger’s story, which is confirmed by the purser, a delay of two hours was suffered by tfie Tahiti in getting aw'ay from Papeete. A steward was arrested by the French authorities on a charge of theft, and bail was refused owing to the French law, which requires proof of innocence, as against the British proof of guilt. The stewards demonstrated on the wharf and wanted to go to gaol to rer lease their comrade, but a French armed guard appeared. The stewards also refused to go aboard, and so the ship was held up. However, all ended well enough by someone giving proof that the steward was innocent.
