HAMILTON STATION.

PERGOLA REST HOUSE. BEAUTIFYING SOQSETY PROJECT. DEPARTMENT TO BE APPROACHED. It is doubtful if the environs of any railway station in New Zealand are so prctly as the platform leading from the Hamilton station to Victoria Street. Still further beautification is to take place, provided the sanction of' the railway authorities can be obtained. Between the present flower border and the public convenience, there is at present a rockery. The proposal is to remove this and to erect a six-feet rustic fence of punga stems, from the centre of which there will project backwards into the yard beyond a commodious double pergola. Within the pergola will be beds of ferns with seats around for the accommodation of persons awaiting trains. Running the whole length of 50 yards, on each side of the pergola, against the fence will be a wide flower border. The idea is an excellent one. Not only will it be of very great comfort and convenience to waiting traveller;' on hot days, but it should serve to hide an unsightly tin fence behind and at the same time be a distinct acquisition from the standpoint of beauty. It should unquestionably make Hamilton the prettiest station in the Dominion and is is to be hoped the Department will sanction the project, especially as the facilities for the general convenience for passengers at tlic Hamilton station arc so sparse and uninviting.
