A Townsville message states that when bathing In four feet of water at Arcadia Bay, Henry Wether el I, agod 20, son of the manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Co., Ltd., was attacked by a huge shark. Wotherell was bathing further out than the others when the monster appeared and tore off his arm. A dozen bathers dashed to the rescue, but Wetherell waved them back, shouting, “ one Is enough for It to get.” Then ensued a desperate struggle, during which the sea monster tore off the other hand and Inflicted other hideous injuries. Wetherell eventually managed to reach the shore, where a nurse helped to stanch the frightful bleeding. He was raced In a pilot ship to the Townsville Hospital, three miles away. Ho suffered Inexpressible agony without complaint for an hour till an operation was performed.
The youth's parents failed to reach the bedside before he lapsed Into unconsciousness, which ended In his death.
This Is the first tragedy of tho kind known at Townsville where thousands bathe all the year In what are known as shark-infested waters.
