TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB’S RAGING

NOTES FROM THE RUNNING Kawainga was the only withdrawal from the Trial Stakes, with which the meeting was introduced. The Adjutant—Titanium filly threw her rider (Turvey) while at the starting post, the horseman being injured. The Begum was about £250 better supported than Sir Mond in a field of twenty, Parfait Armour being third in demand. The public selection was correct, as the dividend payers were in that order. The Begum, on whom D. Cotton was having his first ride jn public since coming here from Riccarton, soon got into a good position. She was well handled to have a length to spare at the finish. Sir Mond ran- a J good race to be finishing on well in second place. Bold Archer made most of the running with The Begurn, and although he was in third place at the finish the Archery gelding was only a head away from Sir Mond. Roman Pearl was fourth, getting off reasonably well, but not having all the luck of the running. Prince of Orange, who was sixth, must have been' more handy at the finish but for carrying out very wide at the turn for home. . The Tc Rapa •candidate"' Was. travelling strongly in third place at that stage. Princess Rain and Arihana ran fair races.

Led All the Way. When Mashoor, Salamander, Marble Mount and Master Arch declined their engagement in the Orewa Highweight Handicap the field was reduced to eight runners, of whom Glena Bay was £429 better y thought of than Rlpon Abbey, with Bizarro heading the others in the quotations. Ripon Abbey took charge from the rise of the barrier, and was not called upon for his very best to win by three-quarters of a length. Royal Form finished on very strongly to beaL the favourite, Glena Bay, by a neck for second honours. - Bizarro was tile closest of the others. Runs the Seven Out Well. For the Zealandia Handicap Prodice was the only scratching. Of the ten runners Jolly Money was a £340 better favourite than High Finance, with Macroom third choice. High Finance soon got the lead, and the Paper Money marc stayed in front, running out the seven, in great style in the good time of lniin 27sec. It was really a very easy win for her. Goldfinch rode a good race, giving his mount a breather after taking charge, and he was not required to ride High Finance out. Ti Tree, who was having her first race for some time, and who is also in the same stable (J. T. Jamieson’s) as the winner, made a good showing to get second, returning very nearly as much as her conqueror. Jolly Money was third, but the favourite did not have the best-of matters in the run home. 1 .Macroom ran a good race into fourth place, but was not quite good enough at the end, The race should improve her. Master O’Rorke was fifth, which was fair form on a track that did not suit him best, but Lunette was disappointing, beating only Cynthia N. and Scat home. The Race for the Cup. When the Gup field paraded Wenday - and Right and Left were the only dries ' missing from the original list of accep- * tors. The public gave most attention • to the Prodicc —Desert Glow bracket, T the Te Awamutd pair being backed to the extent of £340 more than Transformer, with The Lover heading the others in the quotations. The race is readily told, as Flying Juliet went to the front from the earliest stages and was still there as the winning post was reached. Eager Rose headed her on one occasion about half a mile from home, but 0. Mclnally, who rode Flying Juliet very capably, was only giving his mount a breather. The reward for the judgment was there when he later sent Flying Juliet along, and she responded in free style, running the eleven furlongs and 40 yards in the smart time of 2rain 22 3-ssce. This is the fifth race Flying Juliet has won for her Morrinsville owner (Mr E. Robinson) this season, while she has also a second and a third to her credit. O. Mclnally, the apprentice attached to M. J. Carroll’s stables, has ridden Flying Juliet in four races, L. Manson having the mount on the other occasion. R. A. Edwards, the Te Rapa trainer, deserves a lot of credit for the results he; has achieved with Flying Juliet this season. Prodice was in second place at the finish of the Gup on Saturday. She was never further back than third on the journey, so that she had every chance, but found the task beyond her, although her effort was good. Royal Boulton’s third was a reasonable effort, but her showing lacked the degree of sparkle that many expected. Perhaps she will be as much improved by the race as anything, but F ying Juliet will still be a force to be reckoned with in whatever is selected for her on Tuesday. Eager Rose was fourth, after being in the picture all the way. The Lover, Transformer and Desert Glow, g of the others, were well beaten. Transformer was wearing a bandage da Ids near fore leg. A Good Price. Good Boy, Brilliant Light and Sir | ■ Itldnd were scratched for’the Ferry J

FLYING JULIET’S SMART DISPLAY IN THE CUP. VALLAR BEATS LADY’S BOY IN THE STEWARDS. HIGH FINANCE RUNS OUT SEVEN ATTRACTIVELYPOLYXENA SCORES IN TWO-YEAR-OLD DIVISION. Horses trained In the Waikato have a very creditable record as winners of the Takapuna Cup. Flying Juliet la the latest to have her name Inserted with that select band of equine performers, the RomeoPenella mare coming home in front In the contest of Saturday last, When Prodlce and Royal Doulton were the olosest to the Te Rapatrained, Morrlnsville owned and Te Aroha bred galloper at the finish of a fast run race. This Is the principal Item of the Summer programme of the club, which will be concluded on Tuesday. Saturday’s racing found the Investing public near to, or directly on the mark, on the majority of occasions. The Stewards’ Handicap, which was the sprint event of the day was won by Vallar, with Lady’s Boy and Lorient 11. handiest of the opposition over the six furlongs. Another favourite in The Begum, prevailed In the Trial Stakes from Sir Mond and Bold Archer. Rlpon Abbey was never headed in the Orewa Highweight, the second favourite holding out final challenges by Royal Form and Glena Bay. High Finance, who was preceded by only Jolly Money when the public had made their choice in the Zealandia Handicap, was not seriously troubled to be showing the way to her stablemate Ti Tree, with Jolly Money In the following place at the judge’s box. The top-weight, Glenstar, who was fourth favourite, gave his supporters the best return of the day by the success of the Te Aroha galloper in the Ferry Handicap, over Te Money and Palmares. A hot first selection In Polyxena delivered -the goods In the two-year-old event, the Calliope Handicap, in which Royal Finance and Tasty were second and third respectively. The public were once again right on the mark when Tidal fulfilled the confidence reposed In him In the Hauraki Hack Handicap, Brampton and Star Comet being the next to finish.

Handicap, in which British King was the elect of the thirteen runners, with about £450 more than Mussie, Owairaka and Glenstar being the bast backed of the others. The Tc Aroha candidate, Glenstar, was always prominent, and was still doing it well at the close of the seven furlongs, when he had a head margin to spare. His trainer (G. A. Reid) is having a useful turn with this horse for the Gordonton sportsman, Mr N. D. S. Rumney. it was surprising the good price attached to the success, recognising the recent form of the Day Comet gelding and the class opposed to him. Te Money did well to run the winner to a iicad, as he had to come from a fair way back, j Palmares, who was third, put up a. parI ticularly useful performance, and he may improve more quickly than any of the others. The grey gelding was not seen until the very closing stages. Mussie’s fourth was a fair effort. British King weakened jn the last furlong of the seven and finished sixth. Quinsiiia, who was just in front of the favourite, went quite a fair race. Two-year-old Event. Eaglet and Lady Suzanne were the only ones who failed to appeac for the Calliope Handicap, in which fifteen two-year-olds were paraded. On the strength of her second to Gay Ballerina at the Auckland summer meeting the public went solidly for Polyxena, the Chief Ruler—Podokes filly being hacked down inside even money, while Gemlight and Royal Finance were the best backed of the others. Polyxena was the first to cross the finishing line, alter having everything in her favour so far as the running was concerned. But, her rider (H. Goldfinch) had to use hands and heels to hold out Royal Finance, who was finishing at a great rate. If the latter, who is by Paper Money from Leithfleld, and is owned and trained at New .Phvmouth, had jumped away on anything like even terms she would have reversed the positions with Polyxena. Tasty put up j a creditable performance to get third the Lord Qucx —Blended filly travel- | ling very fast at the finish. Carl Idem was running on in fourth place, but a lunger journey would have sui'led him better. Trig and Pellette made a respectable showing, while Fraser was prominent in the running for the turn for home, where he appeared to encounter some trouble.

The Topwelght Gets Home. Glenstar, Whaka King, Lovcband and Arch Queen were missing when the Hauiaki Hack Handicap field paraded. * here were eight runners, but they were not a good lot. Tidal was favourite, £SOO better thought of than Star Comet, with Arikitoa claiming most attention of the others. It was easy the favourite at the finish. Tidal is now in J. T. Jamieson’s stable. ■’(trampton reached second place, while Star Comet was third. Arikitoa was lourth. The Warplane gelding made a lot of the running and his form on this occasion was better than he has shown for some time. However, the topwelght really won very readily. Tho Sprint Item. High Finance, Jolly Monev, Macroom and Takutama, the three firstnamed having started earlier in the day, did not keep their engagement in the Stewards’ Handicap, with which sprinters were concerned. There were eight starters, Vallar and Lady’s 'Boy monopolising the betting, the final figures showing the former with a margin of £4ou over his rival, while .Melissa was most in demand of the others. Vallar was quickly jn charge, and the Valkyrian chestnut was running along very freely to hold his position throughout and beat Ladv’s Boy who was always second after the field settled down, by a length. Lorient 11. and Melissa were in that order of Hie others. It will lake several more pounds weight to stop Vallar, who ; s in great order. CONCLUDING RESULTS. CALLIOPE HANDICAP.
