active' competition. AN EXCELLENT SELECTION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated January 16th., from the High Commissioner for New Zealand: “The London wool sales opened yesterday with a large attendance, all centres being represented. There was active competition, the Continent keenly supporting New Zealand crossbreds. There w 7 as an excellent selection of merino, but crossbreds were in small supply. Compared with the closing rales of the last series merino was firm but unchanged, and crossbred par to 5 per cent, higher. A total pf 103,200 bales was available for the series, of which Ne wZealand supplied 23,700, Australia 73,250, and South America 1200.

PRICES MAINTAINED. SOME WITHDRAWALS. / (Australian Press Association.) (Received Jan. 17, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 16. At the wool sales 8883 bales were offered, of which 6652 were Australian and 2010 New Zealand. There was a good selection of merinos suitable for all sections; a medium offering of greasy crossbreds and a few slipes and scoureds. Prices were maintained at the opening rates. There were some withdrawals of scoureds owing to the high' limits.. The New Zealand clip Waihau realised 2ld. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. Hamilton, have received the following cablegram from their • London house under dale 15th inst:— Wool Sales.—There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and Continental buyers being good, and prices as compared with the close of preceding series ruled par to 5 per cent, higher for crossbred.- Merino market firm. The opening catalogues were fairly representative. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from their London house, dated 15th instant:— The London wool sales have opened with ' animated competition. The attendance of buyers is large and the selection is fair. As compared with closing rates of last series:—Merino were unchanged; half-bred, par to 5 per cent higher; cro'Ssbred, Tine, par to 5 per cent higher; crossbred medium and coarse, firm at unchanged prices.
