LICENSEE CHARGED.
ALLEGED INTOXICATION. WHILE IN CHARGE OF CAR. THEAVY FINE IMPOSED. (Special to Times.) MORRINSVILLE, Thursday. Alan Hood, licensee of the Pirongia Hotel, for whom Mr McDevitt appeared, was charged with having been intoxicated while in charge of a motor car in Seddon Street, Morrinsville, yesterday, at the Morrinsville Police Court’ to-day. Messrs G. M. Gummer and W. T. Osborne, J’s.P., were on the Bench. Constable Cassidy stated that he saw accused leave the Nottingham Castle Hotel, Seddon Street, in a state of intoxication. Accused walked to his car outside Watts and Brayshaw’s buildings and entered it. The constable said he spoke to accused, and told him he must not drive the car in his condition. Accused alighted from the car and went away for a while, but returned, re-entered the vehicle, and was in the act 'of, starting it when arrested by the constable. Mr McDevitt, in defence, said accused had come to Morrinsville with his- wife, and had had a few drinks while waiting for her. He got into his car to wait for her. He admitted he was intoxicated, and asked that his license should not be cancelled, as it would greatly interfere with his business. Suppression of name was also requested. --The Bench, after lengthy consideraion, expressed regret that accused id not appear personally, as they wished to interrogate him and call his ttention to the fact that at the last itting of the Court Constable Heaps iad said the offence was becoming so -ommon that in future he would press or imprisonment. Accused had disegarded this warning. Accused was fined £2O, his license vas suspended, and suppression of lame was refused.
