ADVANCE HAMILTON.
(To the Editor.) Sir —,jt was with pleasure that I read “Hamiltonian’.s”- letter in yours of Saturday last. It is good to know that we have at least one citizen in the community that is alive to the possibilities and potentiality of this by Nature well-endowed town. To obtain “Hamiltonian’s” objective (20,000 population) it is essential that we foster and encourage every kind of enterprise beneficial to the people within our confines. It is not possible to live on air alone. Frankton being part of the Borough of Hamilton, it is incumbent on the citizens of this part of the town to wake up from their lethargy and do their share in promoting the welfare of the town as a whole, and as a means to that end an effort should be made before it is too late to retain at least one portion of a great enterprise established in their midst — the Frankton Railway sawmill. It has always been a surprise to me that the local body, calling itself the Frankton Citizens’ Association, has not raised its voice in protest against the closing of what has been one of the greatest boons to this end of the district since its inception. The employment of hundreds .of men, the building of a corresponding number of houses, the vast sums of money paid out weekly in the form of wages, and the resultant effect on trade; to sjiy nothing of the benefit conferred on farmers in },he outlying districts being able to inspect and purchase their timber requirements at a reasonable price, bringing them into the town to do so with further benefit to the district. With a change of Government and possibly a change in policy, it behoves Franktonites to wake up and rally their relief ships before it is too late, for the old ship is perilously near the rocks. —I am, etc., R.S.
Frankton, Jan. 14.
