S.S. INVERCARGILL MISHAP
INQUIRY BY NAUTICAL COURT. MASTER SHOWS LACK OF CARE. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The decision of the Nautical Court in regard to the stranding of the Invercargill was given to-day. In the course of it the Court stated: The log had not been streamed, and no soundings were taken. Having regard to the thick weather prevailing, and the fact that the vessel was approaching a dangerous shore, the line of which was gradually converging on to the course of the ship, and that no land or light had been sighted, and to the fact that the currents in or near Cook Strait are known to be erratic, vve arc of opinion that the master, Captain Smith, showed some lack of due care in not streaming his log and in not taking a sounding or soundings, These combined precautions, if taken, would probably have avoided the grounding. We make an order that the master pay £5 5s towards the cost of the inquiry/
