TWO MEN ADMIT OFFENCE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. The operations of two men in defrauding the Returned Soldiers’ Association were revealed in the Police Court yesterday, when John Arthur Mee, aged 31, and James Henry Nicol, aged 42, admitted a charge of falsely obtaining £2 2s from the association by representing that a receipt for £4 4s was genuine. “Further inquiries are pending, and their frauds probably run into a good deal of money,” said counsel. The Magistrate, Mr W. R. McKean, remanded accused until next Tuesday. ANOTHER CHARGE. “KNEW RUN OF THE ROPES.” EASY WAY OF MAKING MONEY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Evidence of an extensive practice of obtaining moneys from the Auckland Returned Soldiers’ Association by fraud has been obtained by the police. Three arrests were made this week, and other charges are pending against accused. To-day William Lawrence Bowler pleaded guilty to obtaining 17s 6d by falsely representing that a receipt for 35s was valid. The Chief Detective said Bowler was met in Auckland by a soldier, who evidently knew the run of the ropes, and a receipt was prepared for one and a half day’s work, entitling accused to ttie payment of 17s Gd from the association on the subsidy system. others arc awaiting sentence. All three are to come up on January 22.

The Magistrate, Mr McKean remarked: “They seem to have discovered an easy way of making money.”
