USED AN AXE
SHARK ATTACKED. BY PLUCKY SURFER. Two sharks gave Aspendale bathers a scare the other day, says a Melbourne message, but one of the monsters got an even greater scare, when Frank Smythe, secretary of the Blackbird Life Saving Club, dashed into the water and buried an axe in the shark’s body. When the first shark, about eight feet in length was noticed Smythe was informed. When he arrived on the beach the'shark was swimming lazil>, about 20 feet from the shore in little more than three feet of water. Smythe, armed with an axe, ran into the water and struck the shark a heavy blow, the axe head sinking into its body. The shark swam off and Smythe threw the axe at it, but missed. „ .. ~ Constable Coe and Smythe then secured another axe and a harpoon, but could not get close enough to deal with the shark. -- qa The second shark, which was ~u feet in length, appeared on the scene several hours later. The constab and Smythe again went out in a boat, but could not get close to the monster.
