SURF RESCUE.
BRONTE BHARK SCARE.
50,000 AT MANLY. There were two stirring rescues at Bondi, Sydney, when life-savers O'Reilly and Hymans swam distances of 250 yards and 200 yards to rescue bathers who were trapped by the undertow, says a Sydney paper. O'Reilly saw a woman In difficulties a good distance from the beach, and swam to her rescue. Although the water was comparatively calm, she was about 250 yards out when he reached her. A man swimming off the rocks got into trouble, and Hymans noticed his plight. After a swim through tricky water, the beltman reached the patient, and brought him to the shore. There was great excitement at Collaroy carnival, when a woman put her hand up, an example followed by several others. Geoff. Bland, North Steyne, donned the belt and went out to see what the trouble was. There had been a succession of nasty dumpers, bringing in thick seaweed, and the bathers had become exhausted. A shark was noticed at Bronte, the bell was sounded, and everyone was brought from the water. The surf boat patrolled the beach for an hour, and bathing was resumed. Blue bottles again made their presence felt. It ■is estimated that 50,000 people were on Manly Beach.
