GENERAL CABLES.
HOME AND FOREIGN. LONDON, Jan. 8. One of the biggest fires which has occurred in Edinburgh in recent years destroyed the Bankers’ Clearing House. This was situated on the north side of St. Andrew Square, overlooking the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and several large insurance companies’ buildings. Fortunately the absence of wind enabled these other buildings to be saved, but the clearing house was gutted. London was this mormng enveloped in black fog. At the week-end slight rain and snow froze on the road surface in many parts of the country, and motoring became dangerous. Many minor accidents occurred in parts of the metropolis. Early this morning there were scenes which, on a lesser scale, resembled last winter’s “ silver thaw.”
