BRITISH OPERA.

DAME MELBA’S APPEAL. SIR T. BEE CHAM GRATIFIED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) LONDON, Jan. 7. Dame Nellie Melba, in elaboration of her appeal on behalf of British opera, to-day received British journalists. She expressed regret that Sir Thomas Beecham’s appeal had met with a half-hearted response. “Surely there are enough pepole who are capable of maintaining the opera permanently at reasonable prices,” said the prima donna. “The Government justly expends money in assisting the arts, but .why should music be the Cinderella? I hope to crown my career with this effort.”

Sir Thomas Beecham says he is gratified by Damo Melba’s action. Every help is needed and Melba will be a tower of strength.
