BANK HOLIDAYS.
PROTEST BY BUSINESS MEN. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. A strong protest against the closing days fixed for banks during the Christmas and New Year periods was made by members of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at a meeting of the council yesterday afternoon. Mr 11. T. Mcrritt, president of the chamber, said it had just come under his notice dial the banking institutions would close on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. They would be open on Friday and Saturday, but would close again on Monday and the succeeding day, New Year's Day. The convenience of the commercial community could have been much better studied. Broadly speaking, the banks would be closed when a large number of shops were open, and would be open when shops were closed.
On the motion of the president. who characterised the holiday fixtures as absurd, it was decided to send a telegram to I lie Associated Chambers, suggesting that a strong protest be made to the associated banks, especially against closing on December 31.
