At the Government Labour Bureau in Auckland last week, the total registrations were 733, as compared with 672 the' previous week and 63S the week before that.
Charged with failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order, John Dungey Murton appeared in the Hamilton Magistrate's Court this morning, and was remanded to appear at Auckland to-morrow. Arrears of maintenance were set at 16 10s 4d.
When Ashing at Cape Brett from the launch Catherine B, Mr. K. Myers, a visitor from England, landed a mako shark weighing 3201 b. Another English angler, Mr. 11. Keppel Palmer, secured a mako weighing 3721 b, when fishing from the launch Valhalla.
Under the will of the late Mr Martin O'Connor, of Westport, the following bequests were made: — O'Connor Home, Westport, £1000; Home for Incurables, island Bay, Wellington, £400; St. Canice's School, Westport, £200; Roman Catholic Seminary, Galway Island, £4OO.
Auckland exported during 1927 a greater value of produce —£13,000,000—than any other New Zealand port. Auckland's imports—£l4,9oo,000 —were the greatest in the Dominion, amounting to 33 per cent, of the whole.
The introduction of a motion picture "The King of Kings," into the service conducted by Rev. C. G. Scrimgeour at the Strand Theatre, Auckland, last evening, proved a great attraction. There was a large audience. Explaining the innovation the minister maintained the Church was not gripping the people as in former days.
A thunderstorm at Hamilton, on Saturday afternoon, was accompanied by a deluge of rain The earlier part of the day had been beautifully fine, but close, and sports were well under way when down came the rain, causing' a rush for shelter. All sports had to be abandoned, and the tennis carnival at the Lake, which was very largely attended, was brought to an abrupt termination. The storm was purely local, very little rain falling in the out-districts.
The population for Hamilton is now said to be 17,290; Auckland has the largest population of all New 'Zealand cities, with 205,010. Wellington is next with 129,080, then Christchurch with 123,140; Dunedin, 83,790; Wanganui, 27,200; Gisborne, 15,160; Napier, 18,600; Hastings, 15,120; New Plymouth, 16.8S0; Palmerston North, 20,880; Nelson, 12,060; Timaru, 17,530; lnvercargill, 22,865. The total population of cities and chief towns is 725,985.
