STEAMER IN DIFFICULTIES. PROMPT ASSISTANCE GIVEN. TO BE TOWED TO PORT. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.} (Australian Press Assn.—United Service) NEW YORK, Nov. 29. A message from Seattle, Washington, says a British cargo steamer, the name of which is given as the Chief Maquilla, en route from British Columbia to Shanghai, is in distress in midPaciflc. Seven rescue ships are rushing to her aid and are due to arrive at her ■position early to-morrow. The vessel has a crew of eight British officers and 33 Chinese seamen. There is 13ft of water in the. engineroom and the vessel has a list of 15 degrees. She has a deck-load of timber. Some of her lifeboats were washed away. VANCOUVER, Nov. 30. The steamer Chief Maquilla is owned by the Dollar Steamship Lines, Limited, of Hongkong. She is helplessly adrift in the Pacific 2000 miles west of Vancouver Island. Just .before darkness set in to-night three ships had reached the Chief Maquilla. They will tow her to Dutch Harbour, Alaska. The vessel's pumps are useless.
