The recent deaths of two girls from silicosis has drawn attention to the various trades in which workers are exposed to the dangers of this condition (says ■an exchange). Silicosis, caused by the inhalation of dust, gives rise to symptoms exactly similar to tuberculosis, and to make a differential diagnosis between the two is extremely difficult. The particles? o! -dust may, be coal dust, bits of fine steel or iron, as with men who grind metals, pulverised stone in the case ; of stone cutters, and . occasionally fine pai'ticles" of grata. In coal miners the disease is called miner's phthisis. A moderate amount of dust, however, may be deposited :n the lung tissues without giving rise to trouble.

The best few minutes of a summer's day are those spent in the Marble Bar. There is a list of lovely delicacies at the Marble Bar. ' ■■;-■

It might bethought by those- who saw the C. A. Larsen's crew on their return' from the Antarctic, the majority of whom wore the long yellow beards associated with their forbears, ' the Vikings, that whiskers were the fashion in the Far South, but the fact is that .hair, on the face at the Bay of Whales would not only be inadvisable, but would .be an excruciating penance. The' Larsen's crew work under very different conditions from those the Byrd expedition will face. On the Larsen there is plenty of steam, and below it is warm, while outdoor work is carried on only in the summer. Byrd's men will be out in all weathers. Moisture collects rapidly on the moustache or beard, and efforts to detach lumps of ice from it would be painful if they could be tfelt. The face becomes so numb, moreover, that it would be quite possible, when incipient frostbite existed, to pull off not only the whiskers, but a piece of the skin as well, .without really feeling it. Shaving is next to impossible, and in any case would be very piinful a face seamed with frost cracks, so the hair on the face will be kept short by a daily run over with clippers.

With the Gift Season approaching, there are many who are in a quandary as to the nature of the articles they will present, and again as to where they will obtain articles of distinction and quality, and our advice to those is, to make an early selection at our Pharmacy, as for many years we have enjoyed that enviable reputation for "Quality and Distinction."
