A striking feature in the United States is that associated with the enormous expansion of (he credit system in the retail trade, as well as in wholesale. Mr Frank de Lautour, of Gisborne, who recently toured through a porlion of the States, had (he experience of being refused a cash sale in one. enormous retail store, and on inquiry found that this emporium dealt only on a credit basis (says the Poverty Bay Herald;. Sustaining 120,000 individual accounts, this store based its credit limits upon the individual customer's earning capacity, and encouraged the customer to live right up to the limit of his credit. The result was that the customer was allowed to have anything from a pair of boots to a piano on credit, and his bouse was furnished with every modern luxury, most of which might he only partly paid for. Since a radio set,, valued at 00 dollars in this store, could he obtained for 7f> dollars at a cash trader’s- premises a few steps away, it was obvious that the credit system had its disadvantages for Ihe customer, while the credit dealer covered himself against loss through slumps and other developments by insurance. “Victory belongs le the most persevering."—Napoleon.
