BOWLING.

THE WHITIORA CLUB. SUCCESSFUL PAST YEAR. PRESENTATION OP PRIZES. There was a large and enthusiastic attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Whitiora Bowling Club last evening. The president, Mr W. E. Burrow, presided. “In reviewing the past season the committee feels that club members have every cause for gratification. It has been a most successful and plea- 1 sant one in every way,” states the i secretary’s report. “Daylight saving contributed to it very largely, and many 'members who previously never had any afternoon play were able to enjoy an hour’s play every evening. At the last annual meeting certain suggestions for the improvement of the pavilion were made. Under the president’s enthusiastic and able management electric lighting, papering and panelling of the pavilion and other repairs have been effected. . . The new concrete shed has proved a great convenience. The thanks of the club are especially due to the president for his untiring enthusiasm and energy. (Applause). The relaying of .the croquet lawn proved to be a more expensive work than was first anticipated, the continual wet weather in the winter delayed completion of the work till the beginning of 'the season. The expenditure has been justified and with the work to be done on the lawn this winter the committee feels sure next season the ladies’ lawn will be second to none. Play commenced in September and finished after Easter. Mr H. G. Loveridge won the championship; Mr F. Booth, handicap singles; Messrs Scbtt and Henderson, handicap pairs; Mr J. Webster, first year’s.” Season’s Play. The report then details the progress of play during the season. Rounds of inter-club matches xVere played in which, the club teams more than held their own. Some of the members tbok part in the Ilardley Shield matches in Auckland and Hamilton. Other matches were played against visiting Victorian bowlers. Taranaki bowlers paid a return visit to South Auckland and teams visited Whitiora when a most enjoyable morning was spent. Satisfactory Greens. In spite of the extraordinary dry summer and the extra play allowed through the Summer Time Act, the green had stood up very well and did not show any serious signs of wear, the report added. Thanks was extended to Mr T. J. Mitchell for his ’ consistent work for the welfare of the club. (Applause). The' best thanks of the club were also due to members who had provided trophies and to the Waikato Times for its reports of tournament play. Finance. The financial statement showed the total receipts to be £4lO 14s lOd, and the expenditure, £482 12s lOd. Excess of expenditure over receipts was set at £7l 17s 3d. The balance at the bank at the end of last year was £4 15s 9d, the present bank overdraft being £67 Is 6d. Some discussion arose on the advisability of setting the goodwill of ■ the property on the balance sheet, Mr 1 T. B. Booth considering it to be a false asset as another borough council might want the land. Mr Mason replied that If such an unlikely contingency did occur the members could be sure of compensation. The report and balance sheet were adopted. A tribute was paid to the services of Mr C. W. Wycherley, the secretary. Appreciation was entered in the minutes amid applause. Commenting on the balance slicet Mr Mason said the accounts had been kept in excellent order by Mr Double the amount of money / spent last year had been disbursed. On behalf of the team and runnersup a framed picture of 'the runnersup was handed to the president for safe keeping. i Presentations. / Trophies for the season were then presented by the president. Offers of two guinea prizes for competition were received from Messrs Loveridge, Iliggott, Hare and Land. Mr B. C. Lowry presented Mr Burrow with a case of pipes and a pouch on behalf of members as a token of their appreciation and esteem. Ilis remarks were supplemented by the singing of'“For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Solo Selector Decided. During the progress of the election of officers Mr Loveridge expressed the opinion that a sole selector would be preferable to a selection--committee. He knew of one player who would be ideal and suggested that the club should give him a trial. Another member considered the position was too great a responsibility for one man. Three men were likely to arrive at a better decision and the system had been quite satisfactory in the past. The-, motion to continue with a sole selector was carried on a show of hands. New Officers. The following officers were elected: —Patron, Mr B. G. Lowry; president, Mr R. P. Stewart; vicepresidents, Messrs W. F. Choate and C. Lambert; secretary, Mr G. W. Wycherley; treasurer, Mr E. J. Davy; assistant treasurer, Mr L. W. Hogbcn; auditor, Mr E. P. Cowles; committee, Messrs T. B. Booth, T. H. Mitchell, and A. Downs; sole selector, Mr Loveridge; deputy selector, M.r Iliggott; delegates to South Auckland Centre, Messrs Burrow and Wycherley; beautifying committee, Messrs T. J.
