ONE MILLION STARVING

CHINESE IN SHANTUNG. APPALLING CONDITIONS. (Australian Press Association.) SHANGHAI, April 20. A million natives in the Shantung province, which is the scene of the present hostilities, arc doomed to die of starvation, according to a report from the Shantung representative of the Peking Famine Relief Association, who is investigating the prevailing famine. The representative says it is the worst famine for 10 years. What little crops were planted have been eaten by the starving population before they were ripe. It is impossible to send relief, even if it were forthcoming, owing to the fighting in the vicinity of Ihe afflicted area.
