GREYHOUND- RACING. . A STRIKING INNOVATION. SYDNEY, Dec. 21. An innovation was provided in greyhound races when, in two events, dogs were ridden by specially-trained monkeys. The first event was a hurdle race and the second a flat race. In both races the monkeys retained their mounts. ••; ■. One dog after a race cleared a fait gate, but the jockeys refused to be shifted. AUSTRALIA'S POPULATION. SYDNEY, Dec. 21. It is estimated the population of the Commonwealth on September 30 last was 0,198,986, the increase for the years being 122,550, comprising 66,403 males and 56,151 females. The excess of births over deaths accounted for 75,016 and the excess of arrivals over departures for 47,538. New South Wales leads the Statea with 2,385,339. A PRESENTATION. i SYDNEY, Dec. 21. A cheque amounting to £3237, embodying the amount subscribed as the testimonial for the former Minister of Lands in the Lang Ministry (Mr P. 11. Loughliri), who was defeated in the recent elections, has been handed to Mr Loughlin.
