YORKSHIRE CAPTAIN.
SUTCLIFFE’S POSITION. PROFESSIONAL OR AMATEUR? PREPARED TO MAKE SACRIFICES. (Australian & Tv.Z Cable Assn.) (Received November 5, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 4. The Daily Chronicle says much surprise is expressed at the announcement that Sutcliffe will continue to play as a professional. The Chronicle adds: ‘‘We arc able to state definitely that Sutcliffe sailed for South Africa with- the express understanding that if 1 1 is election as captain were confirmed, he should play as an amateur. The decision of (he full committee is at variance with that of the negotiating sub-committcc. The. present arrangement is unlikely to he more than temporary. Sutcliffe is a clever man, cultured and ambitious and has been remarkably successful in business, lie is prepared to make sacrifices to play as an amateur, and, sooner than expected he will captain Yorkshire, and possibly England, as on unpaid player.”
