THE N.Z. CUP MEETING.

TRAINING AT RICCARTON. (Special to the Times). CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The outside of the course proper was open at Riccarton this morning for fast work. It provided beautiful going, hut it was not fast. Owing to a large number of horses being engaged at the Banks Peninsula meeting to-day the work was finished early.

Agrion, who was stretched out from the 5 furlong barrier on Friday, was restricted to ' half pace work twice round the plough. lie has got over his lameness.

Gold Mint could have improved upon the 52 1-5 he took to cover half a mile. His form on the tracks, as on race days, does not agree, and it looks as if he is not too solid.

Papcrchase, who was carrying a little boy, was brought borne over the last four of seven furlongs by Slarllight. She ran the first three furlongs in 38 and the whole journey in lm. 31 2-ss, and could have done belter.

Starilight’s trip to the Dunedin Spring Meeting upset him badly and he has not recovered from it yet. Rymarch sprinted half a’mile in 50. She was doing her best. Shirley, with a welter-weight up, scampered over five furlongs in 1.3 4-5 and did it in a manner that suggested she was capable of better things. Booster was given easy pacing. He wasted away badly when on his trip to Wellington. Fcnmore was under a pull while dashing over half a mile in 51s. He is not quite ready yet. A race will do him good.

Limerick went twice round the pough at a steady pace. He moved over the ground like a piece of machinery and lightly as a feather. Front Rank and Sudden Storm, who had small hoys up, galloped a mile together. Front Rank had slightly the better of the argument in 1.47 1-5. The first half mile took 54s and it was a useful performance on Sudden Storm’s part. Don Jose beat Noteworthy by ten lengths over half a mile, done in 50s. They carried small lads. Clarinda, Martarma and Battlement set out to gallop ten furlongs together practically from a stand. Martarma carried 6st. and his opponents about 7.7 each. Battlementj who was in the middle, got chopped 'out after going two furlongs, and after that he gradually dropped back. The first six furlongs took 1.20 1-5, and the journey 2.13 2-5. Martarma was under pressure two furlongs from home, but Clarinda was always doing better than him. Battlement’s time was 2.15 4-5. I am afraid he belong to the anti-rac-ing brigade. He looks a picture and pulled up belter than either of his opponents. Giving Weight. Trega and Beacon Light galloped a mile together in 1.46 3-5. They ran together all the way, neither of them being all out. Beacon Light was giving a fair amount of weight. Tarleton and Nincompoop had a working gallop together over seven furlongs. Aberfeldy shaped so clumsily when schooled over two flights of hurdles that he is to jump again on Tuesday. Te Monanui and Star Stranger finished a little in front of David Garrick at the end of seven furlongs, done in 1.31 3-5. All three carried small hoys, and the first three furlongs took 39*1-ss.

David Garrick was fairly beaten, but it looked as if the other two were having a feeler at each other. Both could certainly have done better. Battle Colours was going away from Ariki Wai at the business end of seven furlongs, clone in 1.33. lie had a fair weight up and could have done better.

Blanket, Te Atiawa and Flicker were tried out over half a mile. They were together until within one hundred yards of the winning post. Then Blanket drew away and beat Te Atiawa by two lengths, with Flicker, who is very small, a length away. Blanket’s time was 50 l-ss. and it was a good performance.

Laughing Prince, who looks well, was given strong half pace work on the sand, and Mandane did similar work.

Piuthair was always going better than Verligern in a gallop over seven furlongs, with light weights up. They finished together in 1.30 4-5. The marc’s performance was a pleasing one.

The long-legged Bcnance was given half pace work twice round the plough. He looks well and moved freely. Amorist was given half pace work, with a rattle home at the finish. Silver Paper was too good for Louise over half a mile, done in 50 4-5. He looks better every clay.

Thriving on Racing. Child’s Play and Full Feather were companions in a short dash down the straight. They were under a strong pull and there is no doubt that Child’s Play is thriving on racing. Eulalie, who was sprinted clown the five furlongs'straight on Friday, was allowed to run half a mile at a good three-quarter pace. This liily is very well. There are numbers of track watchers who will not hear of her being beaten in the Stewards’ Handi-J cap.

Money Order and Comic Song are looked upon as her most dangerous opponents. Comic Song is said to he better this year than ever before.

T. Green has been engaged to ride Piuthair iri the New Zealand Cup, while J. Potter will steer Lady Desmond.

TJic following horses arrived from tiie north this morning:—Gascony, Dorce, Charter, Pure Gold, Yonia, lteremoana, Lady Cavendish, Lady Desmond, Bcnzora, Kiosk, Paieta, Silver Rule, and Monaghan, while Civility will arrive on Tuesday. A McCormac has been engaged to ride Yoma in the New Ze/iland Cup. He will endeavour to do him at 7.10, which will be 21b over-weight.
