'SYDNEY, October 28

The New' Zealand cricketers to-day commenced a four days’ match against New South Wales in Sydney. The home side hatted first and were all disposed of for 571 runs.

The teams were as follows: —New Zealand: Lowry (captain), Mills, Dempster, Page, Blunt, James, Allc-ott, Dacre, McGirr, Merritt, Henderson and Oliver. New South Wales: Kippax (captain), Andrews, Mailey, Oldfield, Everett, Gregory, Jackson, McNamee, Morgan, Phillips and O’Reilly. The weather was fine but dull when the match commenced. The wicket was in good condition. The attendance in the afternoon numbered 3000. Kippax won the toss and elected to hat, sending in Gregory and Phillips. McGirr and Henderson opened the New Zealand attack.

Early in the game James dislocated his shoulder and he was relieved behind lbc wickets by Lowry. After 10 minutes’ play Henderson secured Phillips’ wicket with a hall which swung in. The board then read one for 10. Andrews joined Gregory and after a slow opening Gregory commenced to find the fence.

Lowry replaced McGirr with Merritt, but the change had little effect. Andrews was more cautious, but also hit hard at anything that looked likely. Gregory had a narrow escape in the early stages of his innings. Dempster threw himself full length at a catch, but the ball struck his hand. Gregory and Andrews went on playing judiciously, mixing hard hits with stolen singles. lAt the luncheon interval the board read one for 192.

Gregory took 101 minutes to reach his century. Both batsmen continued to give a bright display after luncheon, and the score mounted rapidly. Merritt was particularly expensive. Gregory scored the first six of the match oil him. When the total was 256 Andrews brought up his century after 119 minutes at the wicket. Gregory had three more narrow escapes from being caught. Then Lowry stumped him. The partnership had yielded 262 runs in 125 minutes. Gregory had riil two sixes and 20 fours, and had batted 135 minutes.

Andrews and Kippax kept the field moving until Anurews had reached 134. Then Henderson clean bowled him. The board now read three for 329. Andrews bad hit IS fours and was in 148 minutes. As Kippax approached his' century lie became very cautious and ultimately loach his goal alter having been 125 minutes at the crease, bnurtiy afterwards lie skied a ball, widen was held by McGirr. Kippax bad batted 133 minutes and tne total was 553 for seven.

The “ tail ” did not do much, the remaining wickets tailing for IS runs. Tne entire innings occupied 278 minutes. The visitors took the field with 20 minutes to play, hut an immediate appeal against tne light was upheld. Details of the score are:—
