A Melbourne cable message states that the whalers Star IX. and Star X. have arrived there from Europe. They are-en route to Stewart Island. '
. The directors for the Bruce Woollen Manufacturing Company report a loss of £1566 17s lOd, for a year which is, however, covered by the balance carried forward.
The Main Highways Board has allocated to the Morrinsville Borough £SOO for maintenance of the main road passing through the town.
The estate of the late Earl of Iveagh, who was head of the brewing firm of Guinness, will probably be sworn for probate as of the value of £11,000,000. The estate duty will be £4,400,000.
It was announced at a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday that the Department of Health proposed to establish in Wellington a post graduate course for registered trained nurses.
A financial statement prepared by the Main Highways Board for the halfyear ended September 30 shows the total expenditure out of revenue fund as £IBO,OOO, and out of the construction fund £288,000. The corresponding figures for last year were £167,000 and £213,000 respectively.
A human skeleton, which had apparently been buried for many years has been unearthed by a workman in a gravel-pit at Mr F. Discombe's farm at Hautapu. It is believed to be that of a middle-aged Maori and was found about three feet below the level of the surface.
No concerts will in future be permitted on Sunday evenings in Auckland theatres. This decision was reached last evening by the City Council as the result of a recommendation by the Finance Committee. The committee stated that it bad given close attention to Sunday evening concerts in theatres and, as they were not being conducted in a satisfactory manner, it was recommended that no further permits be issued.
The period covered by the allocation of heavy traffic fees by the Hamilton Magistrate expires at the end of the current year, and the Hamilton Borough Council is seeking to arrange a conference of local bodies in the district concerned with a view to reaching an agreement as to future allocations. The Morrinsville Borough Council last night resolved that it was quite satisfied with the Magistrate's decision.
Mr A. C. Fawcett, who had control of the parking system at the Hawke's Bay Show, made a count of all the cars standing in the parking areas last week, and including those which were parked inside the grounds, his tally was 3032. This total, however, did not include the cars on exhibition, so that probably another 200 could be added, as last year there were 212 on exhibition. Striking a fair average of say £2OO for all the cars on the showground and those parked outside, it can be estimated roughly that the total value would be about £700,000.
