DRESSES THAT ARE WORN
ON ENGLISH STAGE. “ What are the clothes like ? ” A question women so often ask about a new play, is to be answered in somewhat historical vein in the case of at least three new productions (writes a London correspondent). The costumes in “ The Vagabond King,” a riotous feast of colour, are further remarkable for including a number of horned headdresses — fashion successors to the steeple headdresses which are not often seen on the stage, and which I never'remember having seen in musical comedy before. The rust satin and amber velvet of the skunk-trimmed hunting dresses in Part 2—the hunting dresses of the loth century were elaborate affairs — are an exquisitely rich tone, while other unions of colour I remember with pleasure include Robin Hood green and beige, shrimp pink and silver, and reseda green velvet, silver embroideries and aquamarines. in “Picnic,” at the Arts Theatre Club it was the dresses in the Henley scena which amused me most. Did the .vornen of the crinoline period really all those curious bunches of hig-dedy-piggledy • material they put ou heir heads hats ? We moderns ought o thank our milliners for the cloche hat. Among (ho present-day clothes in ' Picnic ” a good idea is materialised u the collar Miss McHugh has on a link georgette coat she wears with a ance frock lo match. This collar is sade in (he ragged-petal fashion, and > of silver tissue — a device worth opying, especially on a summer evenng wrap where one wants decorative fleet without great warmth. In “Marigold,” the new comedy at he Kingsway Theatre, it is Early Vico;ian poke bonnets, side ringlets, a Paisley shawl, and crinolines with : heir fussy little frills that afford Iressy interest —and in such charming clours, too.
