WAIKATO DIOCESE.

PROGRESS OF WORK. THE BISHOP'S ENGAGEMENTS. The progress of the work in the Waikato Diocese is dealt with fully in the latest issue of the Diocesan Magazine. The engagements of Bishop Gherringlon for the month are as follow: October s—Christchurch (preach). October '.)—Cathedral (preach). October 10 to 12 —New Plymouth (Standing Committee). October 23—Ohaupo (confirmation). October 23—Cambridge (confirmation) . October 30—Pacroa (confirmation). The diocese had been concentrating its energies, since the days of its constitution, with putting its own affairs on a stable footing and its offerings for the Board of Missions did not nearly reach the total for which it was assessed. The diocese was asked to subscribe £1309 during the 12 months ended June 30. Excluding Maori mission proceeds it only gave £639 10s 7d, Hamilton’s contribution being £76 0s Bd.

This year the quota allocated to the diocese by the Board of Missions requires the raising of £IOBO, a reduction of £2OO over the previous year. Unless earmarked for any of the other co-ordinated missionary objects under the control of the board, all offerings in tlie diocese for missionary purposes (other than Maori missions) will he given in support of Melanesia this year. Hamilton’s proportion is £.136 12s and Frankton’s £SO. The Maori Mission collections on Sunday, August 7, were not far short of £250. and every £1 of that amount above the first £l5O would earn a grant of £1 from the 11. and W. Williams trust.

The cathedral vestry or “Lesser Chapter” held its monthly meeting on Scptcnibor 5, when a considerable amount of important business was transacted.

The heavy burden under which the districts of Taumarunui and Te Ivuiti arc labouring in converting their church properties from leasehold to freehold has been shouldered by Standing Committee, and it is hoped that the removal of this annual nightmare from the vestries concerned will enable them to make greater progress than has hitherto been possible.
