HIGH SCHOOL HOSTEL.
WOT A PAYING INSTITUTION. LETTER FROM DEPARTMENT. During the 12 years in which tlie Hamilton High School girls’ hostel lias been in use a loss of £643 has been incurred on working expenses. On last year's operations the loss was £O3. The attention of the High School Board was drawn to these facts yesierday by the Education Department, which suggested that either the fees should he raised, economies effected, or that the hoslel should he closed down if it could not be made to pay. The secretary, Mr R. English, pointed out that the hostel fees worked out it about 2Gs 9d per week for full-time boarders. • Tiie principal, Mr E. Wilson, said that ■f the Department had found the buildbig the hostel would have paid. As it was, tlie rent was about £2lO a year. it was stated that when the hostel was opened the board felt it incumbent upon itself to furnish some supervision ver Ills'll School girls boarding in the ■own who in other circumstances night get out of hand. it was generally considered that the ‘Ces could not, lie raised, and it was left u the hands of the secretary, after ’onsullation with the deputy-chairman hr.
