The highest priced Jersey bull at the annual pedigree bull sale on Wednesday was Marshlands General, which went to Mr A. McCheync Murray, of Frankton, for 6Sgns.
The trout fishing season throughout New Zealand, with the excepiion of the Rotorua and Taupo districts, will open to-morrow. The season at Taupo and Rotorua will open on November 1.
Warm tributes to the work of Sen-ior-Sergeant Edwards were paid in the Police Court, Auckland, yesterday, on his last appearance as a prosecutor in Auckland prior to Ills departure on Sunday evening to take charge of the training depot at Wellington. Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., who was on the Bench, said that on behalf of the Auckland magistrates lie wished to express his regret at Mr Edwards’ departure and thank him for the assistance he had at all times given.
An observant policeman, who had Edith Brown (38) under his eye in Queen Street, Auckland, on Wednesday night, saw a bluejacket hand her a shilling piece. This led to the woman’s arrest on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, with insufficient means of support. “I’ve been working for six months, and now I’ve got another job to go to at Morrinsville,” accused said. Mr Hunt told her that she had many previous convictions, particularly for vagrancy and annt bee to caol for three months.
It is reliably predicted that the French Government will reject the latest offer from the Soviet Ambassador, Rakowsky, for the payment of Russia’s debt to France.
Milan Ziganovitch, who was implicated in the murder of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand at Serajevo in 1911, has died at Uskub, aged GO. Serbia refused the demand made, by AustriaHungary for his extradition in the famous . ultimatum which precipitated the Great War.
The McLachlan Memorial, in Cornwallis Parle, has been struck by lightning, is split right through the centre, and is likely to crash to the ground at any moment. Mr Robert Gordon, of lluia, noticed something wrong with the monument and investigated. The monument is situated a considerable distance from halvtation. It stands on the Manukau Harbour as a prominent landmark on Puponga Point. After the examination of designs of articulated locomotive,s similar to those extensively used on the South African railways, a suitable design ol articulated engine has been decided upon by the Railway Department, and tenders are now being invited in Great Britain for three locomotives for work in the central areas of the North Island Main Trunk railway. It is claimed that the use of this class of locomotive will result in a very material saving in operating expenses owing to the high tractive effort and economy in working, and its performances will therefore bo watched with much interest.
