UNUSUAL INCIDENT. FAVOURITE ARRIVES LATE. DRASTIC ACTION BY STEWARDS

An unusual incident occurred today at Ihe Canterbury Park holiday race meeting. The name of the. favourite in the first race was hoisted on the starting hoard, and after Lbc* horse had been heavily backed it was discovered lie had not reached the course. The name was then removed from Ihc starters' list.
The bookmakers interviewed the stewards and asked to he. allowed to declare lhc early betting off and make a fresh start. This request was not gran led.
The horse arrived before Ihc race was due to start, but the stewards withdrew him, as he had not reached the course in the lime before the race necessary under Hie rules.
The trainer explained that lie had arranged for the horse In ho there in time, but the transport broke down. The stewards adjudged the trainer guilty of carelessness and lined him £2O.
