MURDER IN THE SOUTH.
OPENING OF THE INQUEST. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The inquest into the death of the victim of the Burwood tragedy was opened this afternoon before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. Waiter William Prideaux Scarfi identified the body as that of his daughter. The witness, who was greatiy affected by the tragedy, and who had completely broken down when identifying the body, again broke down in the witness box. The inquest was adjourned sine die. An interesting statement was made by Mr E. V. Crouch, a tram conductor, lie lias noticed a rather plump young woman and a stockily built young man wearing a blue suit who used to travel by tramcar to Burwood. What attracted his attention was that they always travelled in different seats. They would get out at different stops and meet at the Laic Terrace Road. Their behaviour suggested subterfuge. The significance of Llic statement that a man had been seen in his pyjama trousers in Jubilee Avenue on Wednesday has been set at naught by the owner of the trousers. He says that he went out to his motor car in a hurry with his pyjama trousers on. “NOTHING TO SAY.” CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. ‘‘l have nothing to say.” This statement by Inspector Cameron this morning epitomised the present position regarding the. Burwood murder mystery. No material new factor lias come to light, and the police are still endeavouring to trace the girl’s movements from the time she left the Federal Hotel on Tuesday until Wednesday, when she met her death.
