MATAMATA.

Valedictory. A pleasant function took place at the Farmers’ Hall on Monday, when Mr A. Crawford, who has been a member of the local railway staff for the past 3 A years, was accorded a farewell social and presentation. There was a large attendance, almost every branch of business being represented. Mr Ryan (stationmaster) presided, and in presenting the guest with a wallet of notes, referred to his many good qualities. The chairman’s remarks were heartily supported by other speakers, who voiC(j4 their appreciation of Mr Crawford’d unfailing courtesy in the performance of his duties. Mr Crawford suitably responded, and thanked the donors for their good wishes and presentation. A programme of musical and elocutionary items was given, and the evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Sang Sync.” Mr Crawford has been transferred lo Auckland, and his j lace will be ‘filled by Mr Meek of that city. V,ital Statistics. Foll6wing are the vital statistics for the quarter ending March 31. 1927: —- . Births 21, deaths 4, marriages 4.

January 1, 1922 to December 31, 1926. the record for Matamata was: —1922, births 81, deaths 11, marriages 14; 1923, 103, 21, 13; 1924, 102, 21, 25; 1925, 130, 14, 30; 1926, 156, 21, 22. Totals: 572 births, 88 deaths, and 124 marriages. Social and Dance.

The Okauia Social Club held another of its popular evenings at Turanga-o-moana Hall on Friday. jThcre was a good attendance, fully 40 couples being present from To Poi, Waharoa, Matamata and other districts. Mr F. Underwood carried but the duties of M.C., and excellent music was provided by Mrs Ryan (piano) and Mr Heke (ukulele and guitar). Mrs Dean contributed extras. The hJI was beautifully decorated, and the supper arrangements were in (he hands of the ladies’ committee. These dances will be continued during the winter months.
