CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING AT TE AWAMUTU. The monthly meeting of the Te Avva.miltu Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday evening, when Die president (Mr R. A. Coyne) presided over a small attendance. The Auckland Automobile Association wrote that the Chamber’s suggestion re the Pukcatua—Arapuni Road had been referred to Roads and Service Committee, and they fully anticipated that Ihe suggestion would be adopted and acted upon. The acting-secretary of the Railway Board, replying to the Chamber's request for an overbridge at the Alexandra Street crossing, pointed out that the programme outlined in 1924 provided for the commencement of work on ibis grade in the sixth year, and would be completed in the eighth year. Works of necessity had been given preference, and as already indicated, the work cannot be done until the main lino diversion is carried out. The Board therefore regrets that it cannot grant the Chamber’s request at present. The stationmaster pointed out that the report published of Hie Chamber’s last meeting regarding the blocking of Alexandra Street on a recent occasion was contrary to fact, as during the last eight, months such a thing had never happened, so far as lie could find out. He explained that the only possible explanation would have been caused by a breaking in connection with the Wcstingliouse brake. —The explanation was accepted. The F(Aiding Chamber of Commerce drew attention to the proposed alteration regarding the compulsory drill for military training, by making it 10 days’ camp, which would all lie in the employers’ time, instead of, as previously, six days’ camp, and the rest in Hie employees’ time. It asked for ttiis Chamber’s support of the protest. —Members were generally agreeable, though it was admitted that locally they bad been met very well in the request to the Department. After some discussion on the subject it was decided not to endorse the protest. The Cambridge Chamber inquired if this Chamber would be represented at a conference to consider the proposal for the establishment of a tourist and publicity hoard, and, if so, would the representative also act for them? It was decided that it would be very doubtful if this Chamber would he represented, and therefore could not entertain Hie proposal. The chairman mentioned that as the present term of the Borough Council was expiring he thought it would be a very good idea if the Chamber passed a resolution of thanks and appreciation for the work it had done during its term of office. This was unanimously agreed upon.
