FUTURE STEPS.
NATURE NOT DISCLOSED. NEW YORK, April 11. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says the question whether, in the event of the rejection or ignoring of the demands contained ' in the identic notes to the Cantonese, ' v lhe same unity of purpose will dominate the “appropriate measures” which I the five Powers are prepared to take is i one on which officials decline to throw i any light. I Apparently the future alone can an- ! swer the question. The State Depart- ! ment indicates that to reveal the next step in the event of non-compliance with the demands would only he giving advance information to the Nationalists. It is understood, moreover that if the five Powers have agreed upon steps to be taken such an agreement is only informal at present.
It is predicted that. America will not embark upon any military movement against the Cantonese, other than what may he involved in protecting her nationals. These predictions have not been denied.
