THREATS AGAINST FOREIGNERS

A serious situation is developing as the result of an open break between the Hankow Government and General Cliiang Kai-shek.

Cliiang descended with a force of 10,000 troops, and distributed them in the native area. • He is determined to exterminate the armed labourers who constitute a grave menace to the peace of Shanghai, arid as the outcome of an all-night fight the soldiers killed scores and wounded hundreds of guerillas and disarmed thousands, seizing bombs, machine guns, rilies and artillery, which they used to compel the surrender of guerillas sheltering in the Chinese Club-house.

A foreign force stood ready, hut did not participate. As the outcome of the affair the General Labour Union has issued a manifesto warning the councils of the foreign settlements that to-morrow they intend seizing the council’s buildings and police stations.
