A MATTER OF RACE.
CONTRACT TO AUSTRIAWS. A COUNCILLOR'S PROTEST. i An objection to the Council granting a sewerage contract lo a certain Jinn on the grounds that the contractors were mostly Austrians, was raised by Cr. J. Denz at a meeting of the Hamilton Council last night. The lender in question was £35 below the next lowest, but Cr. Denz held that as the second lowest tenderer was a Britisher and employed British labour, the contract should be awarded him. He thought the contract should be given to men who were Britishers and who would spend their money in the town, instead of sending it out of the country. He thought the rainpayers would be opposed to the principle of giving the work and money lo a gang of men who belonged to-a nation which recently was an enemy of Britain in preference to men who went out to fight against them. "'Cr. Pinfold supported Cr. Denz, bid a motion that the contract be given to the second lowest tenderer was defeated.
