A.R.C. SPRING MEETING.

OPENED IN FINE WEATHER A HOLDING TRACK. LYSANDER SCORES IN GUINEAS STAR RANGER WINS MITCHELSON. (Special to The Times.) AUCKLAND, Saturday. For the opening day oC the Auckland Racing, Club’s Spring Meeting, which w’as held at Auckland on Saturday fine, though dull weather prevailed. After the recent rains the track was on the holding side hut, nevertheless, was in good condition. There was a big attendance and interesting racing was witnessed. Lysander, -a hot favourite, won the Guineas, Kingficld scored in the Shorts Handicap and Star Ranger led the field home in the Mitchclson Gup. The Opening Event. Newbury, Macroom, Town Guard and Mountain Star were scratched for the opening event, the first division of the Gordon Handicap. Clarus was favourite from King Smock, Wenday, New Moon, Archeno and Papatu. When they had settled down Town Bird was in front and showed the way along the back to Clarus, Papatu, King Smock, Clockwork, Quinsilia and New Moon. Crossing the top the order was Town Bird, Clarus, Papatu, King Smock, Clockwork, New Moon and Quinsilia. Town Bird still had charge as they turned for home, being followed by Clarus, Papatu, Clockwork and King Smock. Clarus, on the rails and Wenday on the outside, fought out the finish, Clarus winning by threequarters of a length from Wenday, who came with a late run and New Moon, who was not too woll placed when they turned for home, was third, a length further back, with Quinsilia fourth. Then came Papatu, Clockwork, King Smock, Arclieno, Ballachulish, Wiltshire and Judge’s Box with Nassock and Town Bird on terms Great Northern Guineas. Antrim Boy, Ballachulish and Tea Bell dropped out of the Great Northern Guineas. Of the five runners Lysander was backed down to a very short price. Chamour, Tinokoa, True Blood and War Officer were in that order and all at good prices in the machine. Lysander was the first to be picked up and going along the back was followed by Tinokoa, Chamour, True Blood and War Officer, the latter being tailed oft some distance. Lysander still had charge across the top and round to the straight where Tinokoa, Chamour and True Blood were in that order, with War .Officer a good way in the rear. Tinokoa and True Blood tackled Lysander in the run home. Both headed the Wanganui colt in turn, but his rider, L. A. Pine, rode him hard in the closing stages and Lysander, responding gamely, forged ahead to have a margin of threequarters ot a length at the post from True Blood, who was a similar listance in front of Tinokoa with Chamour and War Officer following. Lysander’s many supporters had an anxious moment or two in the run home but his gameness pulled him through. Tinokoa and True Blood ran good races and if the latter had been as well placed as Tinokoa at the turn he would have made it harder for Lysander. The heavy going was, obviously, not to the favour of Lysander, who, under firm conditions, would have made an exhibition of his opopponents. True Blood interfered with Tinokoa and Chamour during the running and the committee, after inquiry, placed Tinokoa second, Chamour third and True Blood fourth. E. A. Kcesing, Ihc rider of True Blood, was suspended for the remainder of the meeting. The Sprint Field. Lc Choucas, Serang, Penman and Pompey were not saddled up in the Shorts Handicap. The Papakuratrained Tea Bell was installed a sound favourite from York Abbey with Merry Jest next in demand and then came Merry Damon, Pavo, King Merv, Nancy Lee, Kingiieid, Day Guard, Tukia and Chairman, with White Bird the outsider. Pavo was the first to become prominent and siiowed the way along the hack to King Merv, York Abbey, Nancy Lee, Tukia, Kingiieid and White Bird. By the time the top was reached Chairman was the pilot with Kingiieid, Pavo, Nancy Lee, Y'ork Abbey, King Merv and White Bird racing next. Kingficld carne into the straight in front of Chairman, Nancy Lee, Y'ork Abbey, Pavo. Tukia, Day Guard and Tea Bell. The Cambridge candidate, Kingficld. stayed on well and got the verdict by a length from Chairman, who was a similar distance in front of Y'ork Abbey with Nancy Lee fourth iir.d Day Guard. Tukia. . Merry Jest,Merry •Du won. Tea' Bell, Pavo, lung

Merv and White Bird in that order. The winner’s pace got him a handy position early and he handled the going well. He was ridden by the Hannon stable horseman, E. Tuohey, and never looked like getting beaten when the serious business was on. Chairman and York Abbey were always in the picture but Tea Bell and Merry .Test were never in a position 'to threaten danger. There was an enquiry into the running of Merry Jest and while the stewards were not altogether satisfied with her running, they decided to take no action. The Mitchelson Cup, When the acceptors paraded for the Mitchelson Cup Tc Kara, Town Bank, Scat, Transformer, Sleepy Sol and Mint Leaf were missing. The Nippy-Edcn Hall bracket was made favourite from Mandane with Aurumavis third fancy, half as well supported as the bracketed pair. - Mask, Star Ranger, Barometer, Lord Star, Te Monanui, Ruapapa, Gold Jacket and Bomerday were supported in that order with Muscari the outsider of the field of thirteen.

Muscari lost some lengths at the start. As they came past Lhe stand Mandane, Boomcrday, Lord Star and Gold Jacket were racing in line, the quartette being followed by Nippy, with Mask, Eden Hall, Muscari, Barometer and Aurumavis following, Ruapapa and Te Monanui beiDg last. Barometer fell as the field was leaving the straight. Boomerday led along the back from Gold Jacket, Nippy, Mask, Aurumavis, Mandane and Eden Hall. Crossing the top, Boomerday was still in charge, with Nippy, Mask, Eden Hall, Aurumavis, Gold Jacket, Lord Star, Mandane and Te Monanui racing in that order. Boomerday turned for home in front of Nippy with Mask, Eden Hall, Gold Jacket and Mandane following while Star Ranger was makin a forward move on the outside of the field. Star Banger tackled Eden Hall in the closing stages and wore the latter down to win by a neck, with Mandane in third place, a length away and Lord Star close up fourth. Then came Gold Jacket, Te Monanui, Nippy, Boomerday and Mask. Star Banger (Martian —Gipsy Belle) had not previously won a race in the province since he scored in the Avondale Cup two seasons ago. He has always shown his best form under conditions such as obtained to-day. Sir Edwin Mitchelson presented the Cup to Mr A. J. Foxward, of Feilding, the owner of the winner. Star Banger is trained by J. W. Lowe at Trentham. Eden Hall is a good sort and Mandane would have done better on a dry course. Lord Star finished well while Te Monanui made up a lot of ground in the last threequarters of a mile. Over the Country. For the Hunters’ Steeplechase Beau Cavalier and The Drifter were not produced. Ngnhinepouri wound up favourite from Bahadur, Hazeiburn, Sea Comet and Hypothesis. Hypothesis and Mangahewa were the first to have turns in the lead. Sea Comet fell at the hilltop land Mangahewa at the sod wall. Waiau Lad had charge passing the stand and showed the way along the back to Bahadur, Dimlight, Ngahincpouri and Syndicate. When the hilltop fences were cleared Bahadur had charge from Hazeiburn, Waiau Lad and Ngahinepouri. Indemnity had come to grief by this stage. Hazeiburn and Ngahincpouri went to the last fence in front of Bahadur and 'Syndicate. Ngahincpouri won by three lengths from Syndicate who got up to cut Hazeiburn out of second money by a neck. Bahadur was fourth, and then at intervals came Dimlight, Hypothesis, Waiau Lad, Torch and Boiler. The winner is owned and trained by G. A. Beid at Te Aroha and is a useful sort, though unsound. This was his second win over the Ellerslie country within recent months. Hazeiburn, the Waikato Hunt Cup winner, was always going well but tired in the last little stretch of the journey. Hot Favourite Beaten. With Boya Ceres, Bay Coll, and Flying Tresses scratched for the Welcome Slakes, seven two-year-olds were left to contest the five furlongs’ event for which the Papakura-trained High - Finance was installed a warm favourite from his stable mate Ti Tree, with Laughing Prince third choice. High Finance was the first to show up, being followed down the hill by Laughing Prince, Ti Tree and Chips. When they lined up for the run home High Finance was still the pilot with Laughing Prince handy. This pair drew away from the rest and in a stirring finish Laughing Prince got the verdict by a neck from High Finance with Ti Tree four lengths away, in third place, and then came Marsurd, Zane Grey and Tea Set. The winner, an imported chestnut colt by Quantock —Martian Princess scored over the same circuit on the second day of the Avondale meeting. He runs in the interests of the Wellington sportsman, Mr W. J. Jorgenson and is trained by J. McLaughlin at Trentham. He is a strong finisher and will win more races. High Finance . (Paper Money —ltcbekah) had every chance, but this

member of J. T. Jamieson’s team was not good enough. Another to Cambridge. Luxurious, Bizarro, Hornai, Kameliameha, Lord Guy and Star Comet did not come out for the Second Division of the Gordon Handicap for which Mint Leaf, a stable mate of Te Monanui was made favourite from Nucleus and Tinoiti. Ohinemuri showed the way along the back to Te Koroke, Nucleus, Quondong, Tinoiti, Maveelish and Mint Leaf. When they hit the straight Ohinemuri was still in charge with Te Koroke, Nucleus, Tinoiti an<| Mint Leaf following. In a great finish the Cambridge-owned Tinoiti got the verdict by half a head from Nucleus, with Mint Leaf a similar dislancc away and Te Koroke fourth, followed by Ohinemuri, Quondong, Bold Front, Schorr, Maveelish, Salamander and Template. The success of the Hannon stable representative made the second win to Cambridge, Kingfield having scored in the sprint event earlier in the day. The Concluding Event. Le Choucas, Y'ork Abbey, Sir Archie, Aurumavis, Oration, Miss Egypt, Sleepy Sol, Charlady, Gold Fern, Muscari and Miss Vera did not conic out for the concluding event, the Flying Handicap of seven furlongs. In a good investing race The Lamb was favourite from Archibald, Eh Timi and Master Doon. Quincoma had charge when they settled down from Master Doon, Mosaic, and Curraghmore. Master Doon showed the way across the top to Quincoma, Archibald, Mosaic, Dave and Gala Day. As they came into the straight the order was Master Doon, Archibald, Mosaic, Danae, Dave and Quincoma. Archibald finished in good stylo and stalling off Mosaic’s challenge, won by three-quarters of- a length. Master Doon was two and a-half lengths away third, with Thursby fourth, and Danae, Gala Day, Curraghmore, Tresham and Ring the Bell in that order, the remainder being in line. The Totallsator.
