THOUSAND-FOOT LINER.
WILL THE CLYDE BUILD IT? LONDON, Sep. 15. It is reported on Clydeside that one of the leading shipowning firms in this country is contemplating the ordering of an ocean liner 1000 feet in length. So far the matter has gone no farther than the making of tentative inquiries by one of the Clyde shipbuilding yards, the name of which has not been disclosed, as to whether the Clyde Trustees can guarantee the safe launching of such a vessel in the event of her being built here. The Clyde River Trust could, we understand, give an assurance that in the event of a vessel 1000 feet in length being built, the width and depth of the river would be sufficient for its launching and passage to the open sea. The biggest vessel hitherto launched on the Clyde was the Aquitania, which is 868 feet 7 inches long, and was launched in 1914 by Messrs J. Brown and Co., Clydebank, who have exceptional facilities for launching large vessels. The shipping company interested is reported to ho either the Cunard Company or the White Star Line. The attitude of the Clyde Trust to the present reported inquiry has not been intimated, but it is known that they would be able to do their part. The necessary dredging would be undertaken, and it is not considered that difficulties at the turns of the channel would be insuperable. It was stated in a cable from New York last month that Mr P. A. b. Franklin, president of the International Mercantile Marine Company, Had announced that the White Star Line inwh'Sfone would Ye 62,000 tons’, ot C afloat and The" Majestic 4 5 GSdtte ) mKt^ n ic t ?t Cb,gSeb
