THE BAUME CASE.

ELLIOTT ALLEGATIONS., A CATEGORICAL DENIAL. WELLINGTON, Saturday. Mr Dallard, the controller general of prisons, replies to Rev. Howard Elliott as follows: “The statement in the affidavit grossly misrepresents the position. In substantiation of this I select three main allegations, the actual facts of which arc:— “(1) Baumc was given no privileges in contravention of any regulations, nor was he given any preferential treatment. The prison regulations have been quoted in ignorance. They do not apply to Borstal inmates. “(2) Baumc was not kept at the Terrace Gaol for nearly a fortnight after his sentence as mentioned in the affidavit. He was sentenced on Saturday' night, February 6, and received at Waikeria on February 12. “(3) In regard to Smith, the accomplice, he did not remain in prison after Baumc's release, but was released 10 days prior to Baume.”
