PLOTTING IN EUROPE

THE GREAT CONSPIRACY. A GARIBALDI IMPLICATED. POLICE SUPPLY FALSE PASSPORT (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, November 6. Further particulars in connection with I lie detention by tlie French police of Ricciolli Garibaldi, grandson of flic Libera Lor, arc given in a despatch In the Daily Telegraph from its Paris correspondent. Garibaldi was first taken to police headquarters in Nice lo explain bis relations with 1 lie Anti-Fascists. H° was suspected of having been in close touch with Colonel Macia, organiser and leader of the Perpignan conspiracy against Spain. Tlie police took Garibaldi to Paris after having searched his house and seized certain papers. The correspondent says Garibaldi was subjected to a long examination. Two other persons arc implicated in the strange affair, namely, Commander Lapolla, who is .described as one of the heads of the Italian police in Rome, who for purposes of the Italian Government is stated to have crossed the French frontier with a false passport and without informing the French authorities, ’flic second person is Sccvoli, an Italian Anti-Fascist who was employed by Garibaldi’s brother in Paris.

The Italian arrived at Nice on October 24 with a passport made out in tlie name "Plscane." The police discovered that he was really Lapolla. His baggage is said to have contained 50 bank-notes for 1000 lira each. There was also evidence that he had expended a similar sum. Lapolla also possessed the passport of Sccvoli, which tlie latter had handed on to Garibaldi. The police requested Lapolla lo return to Italy without delay, but they found him later conversing with Garibaldi. This apparent collusion between tlie two men who were regarded as bolding opposite views led the police to interrogate Garibaldi and to search his residence.

It is stated tliat Garibaldi admitted having received a total of 400,000 francs from Lapolla. Tills is all that has been disclosed at presort regarding the mysterious affair, the most curious feature of which is tlie entry to France of a high Italian official with a false passport. The Paris correspondent of the Morning Post says Garibaldi has always been regarded as on enemy of the Italian Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, and Fascism. It. is now alleged that lie has been acting as an agent provocateur in the pay of the Italian police and that his real business was to warn them of the arrival and addresses of revolutionaries. A report from Madrid says Senor Lcurrcux, the Republican leader, lias been arrested in connection with an unnamed plot. Llcr despatches from Paris say the Paris newspaper Le Journal states that the Catalonian Separatists believe their plot was betrayed by one of Colonel Macia’s staff. They declare he will not escape their vengeance.

Telegrams from Perpignan report that in a statement to the police Colonel Macia took the entire responsibility for organising the revolutionary expedition. He confessed that the plot had been hatching for months. The funds were chiefly provided by, Catalonians residing in America. Colonel Macia also revealed the whereabouts of secret stores of munitions. lie reiterated that be would try again at tho first opportunity. LATER.

ITALIANS INTERROGATED. ALLEGATIONS AGAINST GARIBALDI (Received November 8, 11,30 a.m.) PARIS, November 7. The police have questioned the two Italians, Serra and Carano, regarding a document relating to the activities of Luccetti, who is now awaiting trial for an attempt against Mussolini. The document was discovered among Garibaldi’s papers at Nice, and was forwarded by Serra when lie was sec-retary-general to Hie the anti-Fascisls. Garibaldi protests that even if lie informed the police of Die movements of Serra and Carano, lie had not acted as an agent provocateur. Serra and Carano are deeply distressed at the allegations against Garibaldi, and declare that if he has been betrayed by his friends he has only one course.

It is noteworthy that Carano’s brother is a member of Colonel Macia’s force, and was arrested at Perpignan by French officials. The Petit Parisian demands that the Government, in view of Garibaldi’s relations willi the Italian police, shall introduce a strict surveillance of foreigners. GARIBALDI’S EXAMINATION PRESS BOILING WITH WRATH. SPANISH LEADER ARRESTED, (Received Nov. 8, 1.1.55 a.m.) PARIS, Nov. 7. Garibaldi’s examination is expected to last ten days. Tlie press is boiling with resentment against him. It is suggested be sent Luccetti to Rome and was aware of the anarchist plan to seize the treasures of Noire Dame and that lie might even throw light on the Condc diamond robbery. Garibaldi’s brother, Santa, visited him under police supervision during an interval of cross-examination. Thirty French uniforms arc reported to have been discovered in one hiding place. The journal states that Alcxnnaro Lorroux, tlie leader of the Spanish Republicans, was arrested at Madrid in connection willi tlie anti-Govcrn-mciit plot, and sixty other arrests were made elsewhere in Spain.
