A QUIET WHIFF.
IN THE NAPIER WO WEN’S REST. THE PRACTICE TO CEASE. As might have almost been expected, it has not been long before Evo has decided to exercise at least one of her new-found privileges in the Women's Rest in Memorial Square, and complaints have been lodged anent the growing practice of women, smoking in th,e Rest (says the Napier Daily Telegraph). Interviewed by a reporter the matron of the Rest, Mrs Summarsell, stated that the practice of women smoking inside the .building started recently, and she at once laid the matter before the Mayor. She intimated that she was not actuated by any narrow-minded ideas about the matter, but was concerned solely, and entirely with the effect that such a habit might have upon the children who were brought in with their mothers. “A smoke-laden atmosphere is not to be advocated for children,” she said, “and, apart from that, the place is not intended for smoking and such being the case there are no ash-trays; with the result that damage is liable to be caused to the furniture, deco-x-ations, etc.” In proof of this last the matron showed the reporter a beautifully white enamelled tabid, the appearance of which had been considerably marred by a large burn from a cigarette. “So far,” said Mrs Summarsell, “it is only the single women who have smoked, and only a few of those.” It has been decided that, in future, no smo.king will be allowed in the Women’s Rest.
