CONSTABLE TO PAY DAPfIAGES. WRONGFUL ARREST. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Friday. The hearing of the claim by John William Lockett against Constable George Macartney, of Mornington, for £IOO damages for alleged assault and £3OO damages for alleged false imprisonment, was concluded in the Supreme Court, before Mr Justice Sim. The jury found thai plaintiff was not drunk whim he was arrested by the defendant and that defendant did not honestly believe him to bo drunk. The plaintiff was entitled to recover £l5O for his wrongful arrest. The jury also found that the plaintiff was maltreated and that he was entitled to £25 damages for such maltreatment, TRAIN SN RIVER. WELLINGTON, Friday. A heavy fresh in the Hull lliver undermined the bank on which a ballast train was loading, so that the train, consisting of Hie engine and seven trucks, was precipitated into the water, lire engine-driver having a. narrow escape. The engine was got back lo land again only after considerable difficulty.
