BRITISH COAL CRISIS.
REASON FOR REJECTION. AFRAID OF ARBITRATION. (Australian anil N.Z. Cabie Assn.) LONDON, August 10. The rank and flic of the miners re-jcct-cl the Bishops’ proposal for the settlement of the strike by 307,000 against 333,000. Adverse votes in South'Wales and, Lancashire balanced favourable votes in Northumberland and Durham, while the preponderance of adverse votes in Yorkshire was sufficient to turn the scale. The Scottish miners did not vote. It is understood that misgivings regarding arbitration was the chief reason for the miners rejecting tiie proposals. A deadlock is now more manifest than ever. MOVE BY THE OWNERS. INVITATION TO CONFERENCE. LONDON, August 11. A definite step toward a resumption of work in the coalmining industry has been taken. The mincowncrs in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire have invited the Miners’ Association to attend a joint meeting to endeavour to reach a settlement.
