FARMERS' UNION.

HORSHAM DOWNS BRANCH. STAFFING OF COUNTRY SCHOOLS. At the monthly meeting of the Horsham Downs branch of the Farmers' Union the president, Mr T. H. Henderson, presided. There were also present Messrs Boyd, Bruce, Harrell, MacCorquindalc, Osborne, Precst, Roberts, Upson, Silcoek, Battcy, C. Henderson, and the organiser, Mr A. Murray. The forming of a boys' and girls' club to be backed up by the farmers generally was mooted and after considerable discussion a committee was set up to further the interests of the proposal. Mr Bruce's paper on " The Farmers' Union, Its Aims and Objects," was well received, and will no doubt be licard of in various branches of the union. Next meeting Mr Boyd is to give a paper on haymaking, etc., and it is hoped Mr Wild, Government lecturer, will also be present to address the meeting. The following remit to the subprovincial executive was carried: "That Government be urged to staff country schools under the roll number, instead of an average attendance basis." It was pointed out the unfortunate position of schools just bordering on their grade. With spells of rough weather, a fall in attendance was inevitable, resulting in de-grading of such schools. This resulted in a change of staff, which was a serious matter for the education of scholars.

A committee was appointed to make arrangements for the forthcoming annual concert and dance.
